Forty students that are part of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program visited UW-Oshkosh to experience a “day in the life” of a Titan student. According to AVID teacher, Teresa Wright, “The event was centered on understanding what to expect at college.”

The day kicked-off with a tour of the beautiful Oshkosh campus. Stops on the tour included classroom buildings lecture halls, and a dorm room (which was “shockingly” small to the students). Students also visited the field house and main dining hall, where a college-level buffet lunch was served.

After lunch, students listened to a formal presentation about requirements for admission. Students were given tips about what it takes to be admitted into the school (e.g., ACT scores, coursework, personal essay requirements, etc.).

The afternoon closed with a question and answer session with a group of Oshkosh students. One standout on the panel was Josiah Benjamin, a Central graduate (Class of 2018).

Benjamin gave some phenomenal advice to the students about the importance of organization, time management, and how important it is to take rigorous coursework throughout senior year. He also gave an awesome shoutout to Mrs. Wright, saying she was the person who helped prepare for the challenges of college life.

“Part of AVID is to help students see first-hand that hard work pays off,” explains Wright. “We want our students to see colleges and make the connection. It’s part of the support our students need to make their dreams a reality.”
